The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a distinct two-year senior cycle program. It's designed for students who may not wish to follow the traditional Leaving Certificate route (which is more academic and exam-focused) and instead want a more practical and vocational education experience.
Key Features of LCA in Schools:
Target Group: Students who are more practically inclined or who prefer continuous assessment over final exams.
Structure: The program is divided into four sessions (two each year) and includes a continuous assessment model.
Subjects (Modules):
- Vocational Preparation & Guidance
- General Education (English, Maths, Social Education)
- Vocational Specialisms (Hotel & Catering & Graphics and Construction Studies)
- Work Experience is a core element. Students complete Work Experience every Friday.
- Elective Modules such as PE, Computer Studies and many more
Assessment: Combines written exams, practical assignments, oral exams, and student tasks. 70% of the final grade can come from continuous assessment.
Certification: Students receive a Leaving Certificate Applied with one of the following awards:
- Pass (60–69%)
- Merit (70–84%)
- Distinction (85–100%)
